Spill at Jessie Trice Community Health Center

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – More than 100 clients were removed from a county-run health clinic Thursday morning after a chemical spill.

Hazardous materials crews were called to the spill at the Jessie Trice Community Health Center near Northwest 53rd Street and 22nd Avenue just before 7 a.m.

The county-run health clinic treats those who are uninsured. More than 100 clients were inside when the alarm sounded. Authorities then quickly evacuated the building.

The spill involved the chemical phenol, which is also known as carbolic acid. Authorities said it's a toxic compound that is used to treat infections, primarily by podiatrists.

Several people were transported to area hospitals and police officers sealed the surrounding area as a precaution.

The facility was also shut down as firefighters and hazmat crews investigated.

A private company will be cleaning up the spill.
