Child killed in south Miami-Dade County mudding accident

Police: 9-year-old boy killed after Jeep falls into ditch

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 9-year-old boy from Margate has died after he was severely injured in a mudding accident Sunday in south Miami-Dade County.

According to Miami-Dade police, two men and two children, ages 6 and 9, were driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee in the mud about 2 and a half miles north of Card Sound Road.

Police said the Jeep hit a ditch that was filled with about 5 feet of water. When the driver realized the Jeep was taking on water, he got out to try and push it out while the other man took over the wheel.

Police said the man who took over the wheel soon realized that his 9-year-old son, Jayden Young, was unconscious in the back seat, and took the boy out of the vehicle and brought him to the side of the road where he was picked up by paramedics.

Young, who police said had obvious facial injuries, was taken to Miami Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
