Boy taken to hospital after nearly drowning at Jungle Island

Child listed in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital

MIAMI – A child was taken to a Miami hospital Tuesday morning after nearly drowning at Jungle Island.

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said a 7-year-old boy was taken to the pediatric unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after the boy was struggling to stay above water.

Carroll said the boy was on a field trip at Jungle Island with his summer camp when he removed his life jacket and attempted to swim to one of the inflatable floats.

Supervisors noticed the boy was struggling to stay above water and alerted lifeguards. One of the lifeguards pulled the boy out of the water and began CPR until paramedics arrived.

Jungle Island spokeswoman Rachel Pinzur said the incident happened near Parrot Cove. She said paramedics arrived within minutes.

Carroll said the boy was crying when paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

"On behalf of Jungle Island, we wish the child a speedy recovery," Pinzur said, adding that Jungle Island is "cooperating with authorities to investigate this matter."
