MIAMI – Several chunks of concrete fell from the Metromover on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Miami.
The pieces of concrete fell from a station at Southeast Fifth Street, which was closed afterward.
Witnesses said they heard a loud boom after a train went by at about 6 p.m., and then chunks of concrete the size of bricks started coming down.
However, Miami-Dade Transit spokeswoman Karla Damian said the trains weren't running at the time of the incident and said the tracks were already on a "pre-ordered closing" earlier in the afternoon because of construction.
She said there were no issues with service on the Metromover and the trains opened up Thursday for regular service.
No one was hurt in the incident, which Damian called an isolated incident.
“The concrete pieces that fell came from areas adjacent to the steel beam that is experiencing localized rusting; however, these concrete pieces are not structural and are non-essential for the support of Metromover operation,” Damian said. “All locations with similar structural details have been inspected and corrective measures are being implemented.”
She said the tracks are structurally sound.
