Closing arguments begin for second suspect in Miami Gardens gas station shooting

Dylan McFarlane, 21, accused of shooting Kennia Duran to eliminate any witnesses

MIAMI – Closing arguments began Monday in the trial of a man accused in the fatal shooting of two people during an armed carjacking at a Miami Gardens gas station on July 25, 2011.

Dylan McFarlane, 21, is accused of fatally shooting Kennia Duran, 24, who was a passenger in a car driven by Julian Soler, 23.

Eric Ellington, 19, was sentenced to life in prison last October for fatally shooting Soler. He was also sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of Duran, even though prosecutors said it was McFarlane who pulled the trigger.

McFarlane is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, armed carjacking, armed burglary and armed robbery.

Prosecutors said he shot Duran in an attempt to eliminate any witnesses.

But McFarlane's defense attorney tried to throw reasonable doubt in the mind's of jurors, specifically with cell phone records that attorneys claim proves McFarlane called the other men accused in the crime.

McFarlane faces life in prison if convicted.

Two other men are also awaiting trial in the fatal shootings of Duran and Soler.
