The U.S. Coast Guard said a 44-year-old man is in stable condition after being airlifted from a cruise ship off the coast of Pompano Beach.

A medical crew aboard the Carnival Sensation notified the Coast Guard about 3 a.m. Wednesday that the man was experiencing respiratory issues.

A news release said the cruise ship's medical crew discussed the man's condition with the Coast Guard's on-duty flight surgeon and determined he needed to be hospitalized.

The Coast Guard hoisted the man and a nurse off the cruise ship and took them to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
