MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that the jetties in the vicinity of Government Cut on Miami Beach are safe and existing markers are sufficient.
The survey was conducted after the deaths of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two others after the boat in which they were riding smashed into a jetty in the early morning hours of Sept. 25.

The survey considered public input as well as statistics from the past 20 years and determined that installing additional warning aids would not improve navigation.
The Coast Guard also concluded the installation of additional aids would create confusion and impair safe navigation.
"The Coast Guard takes its Aids to Navigation mission very seriously and strives to provide the most effective and safest navigable waterways to the public and commercial mariner communities," said Capt. Megan Dean, commander, Coast Guard Sector Miami. "We cannot stress enough to all waterway users to adhere to existing channel aids and use all available means to navigate safely on the water."
Toxicology reports showed Fernandez had cocaine in his system and was legally drunk when he was killed in the accident.
