Coast Guard rescues 2 after boat capsizes, sinks in Gulf of Mexico

Boaters hoisted to safety about 250 miles west of Key West

MIAMI – Two people were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after their boat capsized and sank late Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress call from a fishing boat with two people on board about 250 miles west of Key West. The boaters reported that their machinery on the boat had broken loose, and the boat was listing.

A Coast Guard aircrew was dispatched and rescued both boaters, hoisting them to safety from a life raft.

The boaters were taken to Key West International Airport, where paramedics were waiting, but no major medical issues were reported.
