MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach commissioners gave their final approval to ban Styrofoam containers at all city parks, events, buildings and sidewalk cafes Wednesday.
Styrofoam was already banned from the city's beaches.
The county commission approved the ordinance last week and unanimously gave their final approval Wednesday.
Supporters of the law call Styrofoam a toxic pollutant that's littering their streets and contaminating the waterways.
The proposed ordinance stated Styrofoam is bad for the environment because it is not "readily recyclable or biodegradable."
"It's just bad stuff," said Commissioner Michael Greico. "And it's 2014, and it's time that we get caught up a little bit environmentally, and this was the one small thing that we could do."
