VERO BEACH, Fla. - A Connecticut man who was biking from Maryland to Miami to propose to his girlfriend was fatally stabbed by a homeless man outside a McDonald's restaurant, police said.
Kevin Adorno, 28, stopped at the restaurant Monday night and was talking to his girlfriend on a cellphone when he was attacked.
Adorno was stabbed several times in the chest and arm.
Witnesses said Adorno stumbled into the restaurant. One person started administering aid while another called 911. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police arrested Rene Cruz, 59, at a Burger King across the street. He faces a charge of first-degree murder.
During an interview with detectives, Cruz admitted to stabbing Adorno, saying he thought Adorno was directing people by cellphone to attack him.
However, witness statements contradict Cruz's story, and detectives said they don't believe Cruz was threatened or accosted by Adorno.
Police Chief David Currey said the trip was a "bucket list" item for Adorno.
Rene Cruz is accused of fatally stabbing Kevin Adorno, who was on his way to Miami to propose to his girlfriend.
