ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Dozens of conservatives sent a signed letter to a Florida Republican congressman Wednesday asking him to apologize for backing same-sex marriage.
"You personally assured us that you were a conservative Republican who believed that marriage was between one man and one woman," said the letter published by Tampa Bay Times.
Jolly, 41, said that as a Christian he believed in traditional marriage. He added that the basis for his position was supported by his "belief in a form of limited government that protects personal liberty."
The Florida Family Policy Council distributed the letter to the former lobbyist, who defeated Alex Sink in March to represent the 13th district.
"We call upon you to publicly apologize for this mistake and hold fast to your original position," the letter said.
Jolly had not responded Wednesday afternoon.
