Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said the boat owner reported the theft after his caretaker called him to say his boat and trailer were missing.

A neighbor told deputies she'd seen the boat one day earlier, so deputies reviewed surveillance video in the area and saw a black GMC Yukon leaving with the boat and trailer in tow. The license plate had been removed from the Yukon.

Herrin said detectives determined that the Yukon belonged to Davalos, who lives in Homestead but frequently works on Duck Key.

Homestead police, at the request of Monroe County sheriff's detectives, stopped the Yukon on Sept. 11 and questioned Davalos about the theft.

Davalos denied stealing the boat but couldn't explain why his Yukon was seen leaving Duck Key towing the boat and trailer, Herrin said. Davalos said he'd returned from Texas the day before and had been working on Duck Key when the boat and trailer were stolen. He said nobody else ever drove his Yukon except his wife.

An arrest warrant for Davalos was issued. He was arrested Monday and being held on $35,000 bond.
