Miami-Dade detectives say women are being targeted by thieves who are burglarizing vehicles parked at gyms, parks and day care centers.
The Miami Herald reports the ring has been operating at least since July.
On July 12, thieves took a victim's identification and checkbooks from a vehicle parked at Westwind Park in west Miami-Dade County. Officers say they got about $2,000 from that victim.
Police say the ring works like this. Suspects write a check made out to cash from one victim and go to the bank of another victim. There, a female accomplice who resembles the person on the identification from the second burglary goes through the drive-thru and cashes the check.
Authorities ask anyone with information to contact Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
