Coral Gables Police Chief Dennis Weiner resigns amid crime statistics controversy

Weiner accused of manipulating crime statistics to make city appear safer

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Coral Gables Police Chief Dennis Weiner has resigned amid controversy over the crime statistics in the City Beautiful.

"I hereby irrevocably resign from my employment as chief of police for the city of Coral Gables effective at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014," Weiner said in his resignation letter.

There were also allegations that Weiner was manipulating crime statistics to make the city look much safer, and that he was manipulating statistics about the city's response times.

Weiner was supposed to appear before the Coral Gables Commission Thursday morning to be questioned about all of this. Sources told Local 10 News they believe that the chief was about to be fired.

Weiner's base salary was $162,679.60
