MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -

Miami-Dade police said a correctional officer in his 50s was shot outside his home in southwest Miami-Dade.

The incident happened Friday night off Eureka Drive near the Florida's Turnpike.

Police said the 28-year veteran correctional officer was in his driveway washing his car when several suspects approached him and tried to rob him.

The victim was shot multiple times and airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

The suspects ran off. Police are out now searching the neighborhood for the gunmen.
