Several fires erupt at Hialeah UPS facility

More than 100 employees forced out of building

HIALEAH, Fla. – A series of fires broke out early Wednesday morning at a UPS warehouse facility in Hialeah.

Sky 10 was above the scene as the facility was evacuated.

Local 10 News reporter Erica Rakow said more than 100 employees were inside the facility. They were sent home for the day, although some drivers were on standby.

"The initial units made entry into this building and found several smaller fires, creating a lot of smoke," Hialeah Fire Department Capt. Cesar Espinosa said.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known, but an employee said an electrical golf cart caught fire while it was plugged in.

"The initial fires were in bins that they use to discard materials," Espinosa said. "Whether it's packing materials or cardboard itself, that was the initial source of the first fires. The rest of them, we don't know what the source is."

Authorities said it's still unclear whether the fires are suspicious.

"There's a lot of content. It's UPS (so) there's boxes everywhere, and boxes are made out of cardboard, so how they move around and what they do, its hard to tell. It's really, really hard to tell," Hialeah Fire Department Capt. David Rodriguez said.

UPS officials didn't say how many, if any, packages were damaged.

No injuries were reported.

A fire marshal will determine the cause of the fire.
