Arson suspected in Miami-Dade grass fires, Florida Forest Service officials say

Crews work to put out 5 fires Sunday

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue battled fires in several parts of southwest Miami-Dade County on Sunday, and now investigators are looking into whether arson played a role.

Fires sparking at five different locations had crews spread throughout the area trying to prevent the blazes from spreading.

At Southwest 142nd Avenue and 232nd Street, firefighters from two units put out several small spot fires in about an acre of a wooded preserve area, using flashlights to scan the area.

At Southwest 147th Avenue and 194th Street, a small patch was still burning bright late Sunday. At one point, seven acres had burned.

Crews were also called to battle fires at Southwest 137th Avenue and 280th Street, Southwest 142nd Avenue and 191st Street, and Southwest 134th Avenue and 222nd Street.

No injuries have been reported. The total number of acres burned is not yet known.

The Florida Forest Service said they suspect someone may have intentionally set the fires. If arson is determined to be the cause, Miami-Dade police will investigate.
