MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two people have been detained related to a police-involved shooting Monday night in northwest Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade police Detective Jennifer Capote said.
Police officers took two people into custody Tuesday morning at the Hyatt Place on LeJeune Road, near Miami International Airport.
One of the people detained, Alexander Stalling, 18, was arrested on unrelated charges.
Earlier in the month, Stalling was shot in the right hand during a shooting in northwest Miami-Dade County.
A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as police led one of the handcuffed men into the back of a police car. A blue, four-door car was also towed from the scene, which authorities confirmed is connected to the investigation.
Two officers were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center after they were ambushed about 10 p.m. Monday while conducting surveillance at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Northwest 59th Street as part of a multi-agency operation on gang activity, Maj. Hector Llevat said.
"We just heard a whole bunch of sounds. It sounded like loud bangs," a man who lives in the area, identified only as Jim, said.
The wounded officers were rushed to the hospital in the bed of a pickup truck and were able to limp inside with the help of their colleagues.
"Some officers -- some brave officers went into that hot zone, pulled them out, put them in the back of that pickup truck and brought them to safety," Miami-Dade police Director Juan Perez said.
The injured officers were identified Tuesday as Terence White and Charles Woods. White is a 26-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, while Woods is an 11-year veteran.
"They were ambushed and we're not going to tolerate it," Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.
Detective Robin Pinkard said the undercover officers were ambushed by at least two armed assailants, who approached the officers' unmarked vehicle and opened fire.
Woods, who was shot in the leg, has been released from the hospital.
"This is going to ignite a bigger fire within us to protect our citizens and communities and neighborhoods here in Miami-Dade," Perez said.
Police said they received an anonymous tip that led them to the third floor of the hotel. It isn't clear what involvement the men had in the police-involved shooting.
