2 shot on Miami Beach sidewalk after argument

Police say 2 detained for questioning

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A man and a woman were shot early Friday morning on a Miami Beach sidewalk after getting into an argument with a group of people, police said.

The shooting was reported about 4:40 a.m. in the 1400 block of Washington Avenue.

Miami Beach police said the argument quickly escalated to a fight near Espanola Way before shots rang out.

Police said both victims were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to their legs. They were expected to survive.

"Girls, guys, they were yelling and screaming," a witness told Local 10 News.

Police said the group got away in a Jeep, but officers caught up with the vehicle on Meridian Avenue near Eighth Street.

Two people have been detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made.

"Our detectives now begin the interview process to determine, you know, what everyone's involvement was and exactly what led up to this obviously very disturbing incident," Officer Ernesto Rodriguez said.

Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol was told that there was a third victim who was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Officers believe he was hurt during the fight before the shooting started.

Washington Avenue was closed between 14th and 15th streets during the investigation.
