2 teens wounded in separate shootings in southwest Miami-Dade

16-year-old, 14-year-old shot hours apart, recovering at hospital

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two teenagers were wounded in separate shootings that happened just hours apart overnight in southwest Miami-Dade County, police said.

A Jatavious Williams, 16, was shot in the buttocks at an apartment complex at 21511 SW 114th Court about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Miami-Dade police Detective Jennifer Capote said.

He was taken to Jackson South Medical Center for treatment.

"I sit down, and as soon as I sit down I heard a whole bunch of commotion outside," Catherine Barahona, who lives at the apartment complex, said. "And I go outside to, you know, be nosey and all I hear is, 'Call 911, call 911.'"

Police believe Jatavious was walking away from a playground in Arthur Mays courtyard when he heard a gunshot and realized he had been struck.

A 14-year-old was also shot in the leg in a drive-by shooting at Eureka Park shortly after midnight, Capote said.

That teen was driven to a hospital by the teen's brother.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho took to Twitter to condemn the "cowardly shootings."

"These heartless assaults on our youth must end," Carvalho said. "Please break the silence."

Both teens are expected to recover.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
