Accused jewelry store robber arrested after police chase ends in crash in Opa-locka

Crash reported on State Road 9, Northwest 22nd Avenue

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A jewelry store robbery suspect was arrested Wednesday after a police chase ended in a crash in Opa-locka, authorities said.

The crash was reported in the eastbound lanes of State Road 9 just east of Northwest 22nd Avenue.

Sky 10 was above the scene just before 11 a.m. and saw a man sitting on the ground in handcuffs, speaking to police.

Miami police said the chase started at 12th Avenue and 95th Street after officers tried to pull over the driver.

At least three vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, appeared to be involved in the crash.

"He was riding pretty fast and they were chasing him going down that way," a witness told Local 10 News. "He must have made a U-turn somewhere down, came back, tried to go this way. Then he made another U-turn and that's when the tractor-trailer tried to stop him, but he couldn't stop him and hit him. They (police) draw guns on the guy and drug him out the car."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews extracted a woman from the Nissan that the suspect was driving and placed her onto a stretcher.

"It's unfortunate (that) the passenger who had nothing to do with the initial case is the one who is clinging to life," Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said.

The woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

At least one other person was also taken to a hospital.

All eastbound lanes were shut down in the area as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

Miami-Dade police are handling the investigation.

The suspect's identity was not immediately released, but authorities said he is a suspect in the Oct. 29 armed robbery of the Just In Time Jewelry store at the Seybold building in Miami.

Two men are accused of stealing cash and numerous watches, valued at about $300,000, before leaving the building. Another person was waiting outside in the getaway car, authorities said.
