Hialeah police shoot 2 burglary suspects as they attempt to flee, authorities say

Hialeah police say detectives catch men breaking into home in Miami Springs

VIRGINIA GARDENS, Fla. – Two burglary suspects were taken to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after they were shot by Hialeah police, authorities said.

According to Hialeah police, undercover detectives were following the men when they saw them break into a home in Miami Springs.

Hialeah police notified Miami Springs police and confronted the men as they were coming out of the home, authorities said.

Police said an officer fired at the suspects while they were driving away in a Nissan Maxima.

"While they're trying to flee, they attempted to run down a Hialeah officer who opened fire, striking both suspects," Hialeah police spokesman Sgt. Carl Zogby said. "They continued to flee despite their injuries."

Authorities said the men led police on a chase that ended in the area of Northwest 67th Avenue and 36th Street in Virginia Gardens.

Sky 10 was above the scene at 1:45 p.m. as the men were sitting in the middle of the street surrounded by police.

One of the suspects appeared to be bleeding in his shoulder area and was taken away on a stretcher.

The other man, who was handcuffed, had blood covering his stomach area over his white T-shirt. He was being checked out by paramedics while he sat near the sidewalk before being placed on a stretcher.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Hialeah Fire Rescue were called to the scene and took the men to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"They would've been in and out, but today their luck ended and luckily no one else other than them were hurt," Zogby said.

According to Zogby, undercover officers spotted the men casing homes in Hialeah before they hit up the home in Miami Springs.

The suspects' identities and conditions have not been released.
