Detectives seek public's help in finding driver who fatally struck Weston bicyclist

Bicycle ride held in victim's honor

WESTON, Fla. – Broward sheriff's detectives are seeking the public's help in finding the driver who fatally struck a bicyclist Sunday in Weston.

Authorities found a car Monday that matched the description of the vehicle that hit Chris Mohr. The car is a white, older-model vehicle with front-end damage, deputies said.

"You got to live with what you do and there's consequences for everything," Mohr's son, Alex, said. "So, if there's anyone out there who knows anything, it's very important that those who need to know know and that there's justice for my dad."

Authorities said Mohr, 50, was hit by the car Sunday morning while riding his bike on State Road 84.

Deputies said the driver involved in the accident took off, leaving Mohr on the side of the road.

"He was riding his bike. He was training for a 100-mile race, and we're going to miss him. He was a good, good friend," David Korva of Levee Riders said.

Korva is part of the same cycling club as Mohr. He said all the club's members have felt unsafe at times riding in the area.

"We have a lot of close calls," Korva said. "You feel the cars driving really, really close to you. We can feel the wind."

Mohr's wife, Robin, said her husband was always cautious when he rode, wearing reflective gear even in daylight hours and making sure to stay in the bike lane.

Mohr was killed on the morning of his daughter's 21st birthday.

"It's 24 hours later," Robin Mohr told Local 10 News on Monday. "At some point you have to take ownership for what you did."

Mohr's family said he was on his way to Markham Park when he was hit. They said cycling had become a passion for him.

A ride was held Tuesday night in his honor.

Members of the Levee Riders  cycled 10 miles from Markham Park to U.S. 27 and back. Mohr's son lead the pack and riders, who were asked to bring candles to place in the parking spot where Mohr parked his car every Tuesday night before his ride.

Alex Mohr also wore his father's jersey during the ride.

"This will have the most meaning to me," he said. "I am wearing his jersey. I ride for him because he can't ride."

The parking lot is the same location where detectives believe the hit-and-run driver abandoned their vehicle.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
