Drifter confesses to killing Wilton Manors man after meeting for drinks, sex, deputies say

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – A drifter who met a Wilton Manors man 14 years ago recently confessed to killing him and was arrested last month on murder and theft charges, authorities said.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said Joshua Odom, 38, walked into a police station in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 11 and told a detective that he had killed Richard Busey, 69, in 2002.

Deputies said Odom, who was homeless at the time, met Busey on April 4, 2002, and went back to Busey's apartment with him for drinks and sex.

Odom told the detective that he decided to rob and kill Busey so he could buy drugs, authorities said.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Busey was found dead on his living room floor by a friend who went to check on him and found his body covered with a sheet. He appeared to have trauma to his body and a table nearby was turned over.

Odom was arrested Aug. 25 and was interviewed the next day by a BSO homicide detective in Des Moines.

He taken into BSO custody on Wednesday. Odom faces charges of first-degree murder and theft.
