Driver flees after striking teenager near high school in Pompano Beach

Victim taken to Broward Health Medical Center

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A driver drove away Friday afternoon after striking a teenage boy in Pompano Beach, authorities said.

The hit-and-run was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 1000 block of Northwest Sixth Avenue, near Blanche Ely High School.

A witness told Local 10 News that the teen was riding his bicycle when he was struck by the car.

"He flew into the yard and then, like, it was so crazy," Dontavius Mack said.

Authorities said the teen landed on top of a parked car.

Mack said he saw the driver stop for a second, but then he drove away.

He said there were at least four people inside the vehicle.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said the teen was taken as a trauma alert to Broward Health Medical Center after being hit by the white, four-door car, believed to be a newer model Chrysler 200.

She said the teen's injuries are non-life-threatening.

A perimeter was set up in the area as deputies searched for the driver.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
