Family, friends hold vigil to remember slain Chili's employee

Lester Reid shot, killed while working at Miami Gardens restaurant

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Friends, family and co-workers gathered in prayer Tuesday outside of a Chili's in Miami Gardens to remember a cook who was shot and killed Monday while working at the restaurant.

The group held candles toward the sky in honor of Lester Reid, 36.

"For every tournament, this place is packed, so we have a responsibility as a community to be here to light his candle," a woman, who did not want to be identified, said.

Loved ones said Reid was working at Chili's to support his family.

Miami Gardens police believe that Arturo Exum, 31, shot and killed Reid after he got a call from his girlfriend that she'd gotten into an argument with him while working at the restaurant.

Lester Reid was fatally shot while working at a Chili's restaurant in Miami Gardens.

Police said Exum showed up to the restaurant to confront Reid and then opened fire in front of  multiple witnesses.

"We pray for his family, his loved ones, his kids," a man, who did not want to identified, said.

Exum faces a charge of first-degree murder in Reid's death.

Records show that an ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order against Exum in 2015 after he grabbed a glass candle holder and began to strike her multiple times until the object broke.

The document said he placed his hands around her neck and strangled her. Police said she lost consciousness for 10 minutes.

The victim was pregnant at the time. Exum was sentenced to three years of probation and he had to complete an anger management course.

The restraining order was the fourth filed against Exum.
