Cavalcoli pleaded guilty in January to attempting to coerce or entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Cavalcoli made arrangements to meet with an undercover officer, whom he believed to be the boy's father. He was arrested Aug. 7 in Weston.

Cavalcoli's attorney, David Rothman, said Calvalcoli, who was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, has helped save an untold number of lives with his research.
