Hialeah man accused of drunken driving with 3 children in car

Ruben Aboy arrested after traveling 87 mph in 45 mph zone, deputies say

Ruben Aboy is accused of driving recklessly with three children in a car while intoxicated.

SUMMERLAND KEY, Fla. – A Hialeah man was arrested Sunday after driving recklessly on a Florida Keys highway with three children in the car while he was intoxicated, Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies said.

Ruben Aboy, 39, was traveling south in Big Pine Key when Deputy Ken Fricke spotted Aboy's car traveling 87 mph in a 45 mph zone, sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Fricke caught up with the car in Summerland Key, where several vehicles had to pull to the side of the road to avoid a collision, Herrin said.

The car turned into a dead-end access road, but the driver, later identified as Aboy, refused to follow instructions from the deputy, Herrin said.

Aboy refused to submit to a field-sobriety test or a breath test and was taken into custody, Herrin said.

Three children were in the car, including the youngest, who was not sitting in a car seat as required by law, Herrin said.

A check of the car's license plate determined that it was registered to a tow truck transporter. Aboy, who owns a tow truck company, told Fricke that he decided to put the license plate on the car so that he could take a vacation in the Keys, Herrin said.

Aboy was previously arrested on a DUI charge, and his driving privileges only allow him to travel to and from work, church and school.

Aboy was arrested on charges of DUI and child neglect. He also received citations for having no proof of insurance, speeding, passing in a no-passing zone and refusing to submit to tests.
