High school sophomore arrested after convenience store parking lot shooting

Details of Zavion Alahad's arrest were released Tuesday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The arrest records of Zavion Alahad, 17, who was arrested last month on a second-degree murder charge, were released Tuesday.

Alahad, a sophomore at Mavericks High School, was identified by a witness as a shooter who shot a man in a convenience store parking lot about 12:23 p.m. Dec. 19 in the 1000 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale police said.

The witness told police that she had driven a friend to the store so he could get change for a $100 bill.

The witness’s friend was approached by Alahad when he walked out of the store, the witness said, and the pair began to tussle, the police report said. During the scuffle, the victim was shot three times and collapsed in the parking lot.

Alahad fled into the backyard of a home, the report said.

A short- ime later, police got a call about a man who lives in the 1000 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue, in an apartment with a white Christmas tree, who ran by carrying a gun in his hand, the report said.

The caller, who didn’t give her name to police, said the person’s name was Zavion and that he was wearing a gray shirt, according to the report.

Fort Lauderdale police responded to the home with the white Christmas tree in the window and while at the house, a detective noticed a steak knife on the ground.

The detective picked up the knife and placed it on a barbecue grill, when he noticed that, inside the grill, there was a gray sweatshirt inside a plastic bag, inside the grill, the police report said.

By 3:20 p.m., the victim’s friend arrived at the home and identified Alahad as the shooter, police said.

Police recovered a hooded sweatshirt and several 9 mm rounds inside the apartment.

Alahad was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.
