MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who was involved in a standoff with Miami-Dade police Thursday that closed down a portion of Florida's Turnpike in southern Miami-Dade County appeared in court the next morning, where he was granted a $12,500 bond.
Miami-Dade police said Troy Sibila, 45, led officers on a chase after they responded to a call about an armed man who had threatened to shoot his relatives and himself.
Police said Sibila's estranged wife called 911 shortly after 7 a.m. and said that her husband had threatened to shoot family members at a home in the 15700 block of Southwest 26th Street.
Police issued a Be On The Lookout for Sibila and his vehicle, and officers spotted the black, 2015 Lexus in the afternoon, heading south on the Turnpike.
Police said Sibila refused to pull over, and officers saw Sibila hold a gun to his head.
An officer, who is also a hostage negotiator, called Sibila and convinced him to stop his car just north of exit 1, police said.
Police said hostage negotiators and the Police Department's Special Response Team were called in and convinced Sibila to surrender peacefully after several hours.
Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed just north of exit 2 and reopened by 6 p.m.
Sibila faces charges of fleeing and eluding police and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
