MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A man accused of shooting at officers Sunday in Miami Gardens appeared in court Monday, where a Miami-Dade County judge ordered that he be held in jail without bond.
Gary Sprauve, 37, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder on a police officer and utilization of a firearm under the commission of a felony.
He showed no emotion while appearing before the judge and his right hand was in a cast.
Dashcam video from a police cruiser shows the moment Sprauve was pulled over for driving without headlights.
The video shows an officer approaching the driver's door and then shots fire out just inches from the officer's head.
The officer returned fire, striking Sprauve on the hand.
According to police, Sprauve took off and led police on a chase, which ended along Northwest 191st Street and North Miami Avenue.
Police Chief Antonio G. Brooklen said Sprauve was arrested and taken to a hospital before being booked into jail. The officer was uninjured.
Brooklen said officers found two guns and a bulletproof vest inside Sprauve's car.
"(We're) in a day, in an age where it seems like it's happening more frequent, that individuals are committing crimes against officers, shooting at officers," Brooklen said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
