Man robs Oriental Market in Hialeah at knifepoint

Employees hand over undisclosed amount of cash, police say

HIALEAH, Fla. – Hialeah police are searching for a man who robbed a store over the weekend at knifepoint.

The robbery was reported just after 11 a.m. Sunday at the Oriental Market at 1416 W. 49th St.

According to Hialeah police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez, a man approached two employees who were behind a counter, pulled out a knife and demanded money from the cash register.

Surveillance video shows one customer calmly walk away while another stands beside the robber while waiting to pay.

Police said the victims complied with the robber's orders and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.

"It was short and simple," Rodriguez said. "He just wanted the cash and they did the right thing. They just gave him the money and let him walk out. That was the best thing to do. Nobody got hurt."

Nearby business owners were shocked about the robbery.

"I don't know what this world is coming to. Things like that don't happen here," pizza shop owner Brigette Di Piazza said. "It's not something you want around you. It's not something you want for your neighbors, especially since we're all family owned."

The robber is described as a black man between the ages of 20 to 30. He is about 6 feet tall with a thin build and a tattoo on the right side of his neck.

He was wearing a blue hoodie and khaki shorts during the robbery.

Anyone with information about his identity is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
