Man shot in leg at Florida Memorial University, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue says

FMU administrators say shooting happened just outside front gate

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A man was shot in the leg Tuesday morning at Florida Memorial University, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they were called to the campus at 15800 NW 42nd Ave. in Miami Gardens shortly after 11 a.m.

MDFR initially said that a man had been shot in the leg inside a dorm room on campus, but an administrator at the university told Local 10 News that the location of the shooting has not yet been determined.

Sky 10 was above the scene as police blocked off an area and looked through a car that was parked near the university's entrance.

Police officers were also seen entering a dorm building.

Authorities said the victim told rescue crews that he was walking and felt something odd. His friends later brought him to the front gate, where rescue crews took him to Aventura Hospital.

FMU sent an alert to students and staff after the shooting, saying that the campus was on "lockdown while police officials and campus officials complete their investigations."

The alert advised everyone on campus to stay inside their dorm rooms, office and buildings until the lockdown was lifted. It wad lifted about 1 p.m.

FMU officials said about 500 to 600 students were on campus when the shooting occurred.

"(The) Miami Gardens Police Department conducted a sweep. They have lifted that lockdown and unfortunately that's all that I know right now," FMU spokeswoman Ceeon Smith said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.
