MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A high-tech gunfire detection system is coming to high-crime neighborhoods in Miami-Dade.
The Miami-Dade County commission approved $5.6 million Tuesday for a 10-year contract to deploy Shot Spotter devices, which pinpoint sounds of gunshots in real time.
Police said Shot Spotter technology allows them to respond to gunfire quicker and provides another tool to investigate gun crimes.
Miami-Dade police plan to incorporate it into its system of street cameras and monitor it in its real-time crime center.
"It's going to be used as a resource, as a tool for law enforcement, not for oversight, but to really help solve cases and make the community a lot safer," Miami-Dade police director Juan Perez said.
Shot Spotters are used in about 90 cities around the country, including Miami and Miami Gardens.
