MIAMI – Miami police set up a perimeter Tuesday morning outside an apartment building in downtown Miami and detained at least two men who detectives questioned about a shooting on South Beach Sunday that killed a tourist from New York.
Sky 10 was above the building at 185 SE 14th Terrace at 10:45 a.m. and saw more than a dozen police cruisers parked outside the building. Miami Beach police were also at the scene.
Two men were seen being taken out of the building shortly after in handcuffs.
Miami Beach police said all of the people detained are considered "possible people of interest" in the case. Local 10 News reporter Terrell Forney was at the scene shortly after two men were brought out and said that officers eventually removed the handcuffs from both men.
Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said all persons of interest who were detained Tuesday spoke to detectives at the police station and are fully cooperating.
Police said Lavon Walker, 30, was shot shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday by three men while eating breakfast outside the News Cafe near Eighth Street and Ocean Drive.
Loved ones said he was a founding member of the Save Our Streets organization, which works to end gun violence and steer young children away from dangerous paths.
Detectives said they have recovered a white, rental Jeep, which the gunmen are believed to have fled in.
The owner of Avanti Rent A Car in Miami said three men from New York rented the Jeep from him and were supposed to drop the vehicle off on Monday.
He said the men, including one seen on Sky 10 video wearing pink shorts, dropped off the Jeep on Sunday.
He said he called police after discovering a bullet hole in the Jeep and authorities towed the vehicle away.
"We had a suspicion something was going on with the car because we saw like a bullet impact on a car and we decided to call the police," Pedro Alvarez said.
No arrests have been made in the shooting. Rodriguez said everyone who was interviewed by detectives Tuesday was released.
