Pet owner, police search for dog taken in Wilton Manors burglary

Sophie has cancer, needs medication

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Greg Leoce said he's been feeling empty inside since his dog was stolen during a burglary inside his Wilton Manors apartment.

Sophie, a terrier-pit bull mix, was taken on Thursday.

"She's just a very sweet, docile dog," Leoce said.

Leoce said he noticed his kitchen window was busted open when came home Thursday. His home on Northwest 26th Street had been ransacked, and his laptop, cash and Sophie were gone.

"If someone were to break into the apartment, she would likely give them kisses and love," Leoce said.

Surveillance video captured the burglar leaving the property with the dog.

"We noticed that the dog was missing and the leash that I usually keep on the bookshelf right in the front doorway was gone," Leoce said.

Pet detective Jamie Katz took her search dogs out Sunday to try and find Sophie. So far, no luck.

To make things worse, Leoce said Sophie has cancer and need medication.

"She's, one, not getting the medication that she needs daily, so that's a big concern of mine," he said. "Two, I can't imagine what somebody would want with her, other than for fighting."

Leoce hoping someone knows who the person who took his dog is, and will turn her into police.

"I just want my dog back," he said. "They could have stolen everything in my apartment. I wouldn't have cared, but I just want my dog back."

Anyone with information is asked to call Leoce at 216-650-5838 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
