16-year-old boy shot by Miami-Dade police after spotted riding in car used in carjacking

3 teens taken into custody

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy was shot Wednesday by a Miami-Dade police officer in southwest Miami-Dade County, Detective Marjorie Eloi said.

The shooting was reported at Southwest 115th Avenue and Southwest 224th Street.

Sky 10 was above the shooting scene as a large police presence was in the area.

According to Eloi, officers spotted a white four-door Kia just after 12:30 p.m. in the area of Southwest 224th Street and 112th Avenue. She said the car had been used in a carjacking last week.

Eloise said officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver led police on a short chase.

A 15-year-old boy jumped out of the moving car and fired at officers as they tried to stop him, Eloi said.

The two other boys who were inside the car ran away and one of them also exchanged gunfire with officers, Eloi said.

The 16-year-old boy who allegedly fired at officers was shot by police and taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The 15-year-old boy was not injured and was taken into custody.

A third teen was later taken in custody, police said.

Two schools were placed on lockdown while police were in the area: Pine Villa Elementary School and Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts.

Miami-Dade police have not released the identities of the officers who fired their weapons, but said one is a woman who has been with the department for three years and the other is a man who has been with the department for 13 years.

It's unclear whether the teens were involved in last week's carjacking.

The incident was the second shooting involving a law enforcement officer in Miami-Dade County in the same day. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper fatally shot a suspect hours earlier in Miami Gardens.
