No bath salts, flakka detected in system of man arrested in face-biting attack

Austin Harrouff's attorney says client is suffering from 'severe mental illness'

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ The FBI did not find bath salts or synthetic drugs like flakka in the system of Austin Harrouff after he was arrested in the August murder of a Martin County couple, discovery documents released Wednesday said.

According to the documents, only alcohol and minimal levels of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, were found in the 19-year-old's system after the killing.

Initial blood tests showed that Harrouff tested negative for marijuana, cocaine and other "street drugs."

Harrouff's attorney, Nellie King, told the Palm Beach Post in a statement that other than THC, the only drugs found in Harrouff's system were ones that were "medically introduced to him" at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was taken by authorities after the attack.

King said Harrouff "is struggling with severe mental illness and the judicial process will bear all of this out in due time."

Harrouff was arrested Aug. 14 after he was found hovering over the body of John Stevens in the victim's garage while biting and removing pieces of the victim's face with his teeth, Martin County sheriff's deputies said.

Michelle Mishcon Stevens was also found dead inside the garage.

According to court documents, Harrouff told deputies that he "ate humans" and asked for help, saying that he couldn't breathe.

Photos released Wednesday of evidence at the scene included a bloody knife and scissors that were allegedly used in the attack.

Detectives said the victims' neighbor, Jeffrey Fisher, 47, was attacked while trying to help the couple and was released from the hospital days later.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said the first deputy who arrived tried to stop Harrouff with a Taser, but was unsuccessful. More deputies and a K-9 unit were called and eventually overpowered him.

Harrouff is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
