Shoplifters trick employees at Marathon Publix, deputies say

Employees realize they were duped after couple leaves store

MARATHON, Fla. – A couple who shoplifted at a Publix supermarket in Marathon tricked employees into believing that they had paid for the items, authorities said.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said the couple walked into the Publix at 6:45 p.m. Monday with a shopping cart and filled a Publix shopping bag with items. They also put some items in the shopping cart.

Herrin said the couple approached the customer service desk with the bag of items and told the clerk that they wanted to return the items from a previous purchase.

They were given store credit for the items, which they used to purchase the merchandise that they had in their cart, Herrin said.

Employees didn't realize they had been fooled until after the couple left the store.

Anyone with information about the thieves' identities is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 305-289-2430 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-346-TIPS.
