Gunman follows South Beach resident to apartment, robs him

Police try to identify man who pistol-whipped victim, causing gun to fire

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Police are trying to identify a man who followed a Miami Beach resident to his apartment building, robbed him and pistol-whipped him, causing the gun to fire.

The armed robbery was reported about 3:30 a.m. Nov. 29 at an apartment building on Alton Road in South Beach.

Miami Beach police said the victim was walking to his home when he noticed another man following him. As the victim approached the walkway to his building, the man pulled out a gun, pointed it at him and said, "What do you have? Give me all you got."

Police said the victim gave the gunman his wallet and cellphone, but the gunman struck him on the head with his gun anyway, causing it to fire.

The bullet didn't hit the victim. The gunman got into a green Kia waiting nearby.

Police on Friday released surveillance video of the man trying to get inside unlocked cars in the area minutes before the incident.

Anyone who recognizes the man from the video is asked to call police.
