Carjacking suspects in custody after Fort Lauderdale police chase

Trio taken into custody without incident, police say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Three people were arrested after a brief chase Wednesday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale.

The pursuit began in the 1300 block of Northwest 27th Avenue.

Fort Lauderdale police said a preliminary investigation revealed that officers saw a black 2017 Dodge Journey, believed to have been stolen in an armed carjacking, in the 1300 block of Northwest 27th Avenue.

A subsequent records check confirmed the vehicle was taken in a carjacking Tuesday night from the 1100 block of Southeast Eighth Street, police said.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but police said the driver refused to stop, disobeying numerous traffic laws and initiating a police pursuit.

At one point, one of the tires on the stolen SUV blew out.

The pursuit ended when one suspect jumped out of the back passenger seat and took off running, but he quickly surrendered to police and held his hands in the air.

Sky 10 was above the scene as the pursuit came to an end off Northwest 34th Avenue near a middle school.

Police said all three suspects -- a 15-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys -- were taken into custody without incident. They face charges of armed carjacking and resisting arrest.

One of the 14-year-old boys who drove the vehicle faces charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license.

Residents in the area told Local 10 News that some of the children in the neighborhood witnessed the incident.

"Many children could have been hit today, you know, because it happened when the kids were getting out of school," one woman said.
