MIAMI – A 17-year-old boy is recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was shot early Thursday in northwest Miami-Dade County.
The shooting was reported just after 12:30 a.m. on Northwest 84th Street.
The teen's mother said she woke up to gunshots and saw her son lying on the ground, asking for help outside of their home.
"It's traumatizing because it's my son," Suprina Campbell said.
Campbell said her son, Trey, was sitting outside their home when someone drove up and opened fire. She said the teen was listed in critical condition.
"Ya'll got to break the code of silence," Campbell said. "You don't have friends out here. Nobody's your friend. It's the kids. It's our young kids. And it's sad, because they killing each other."
Campbell said Trey is a student at AMIkids in North Miami Beach, a school that helps troubled teens turn their lives around.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the shooting involving one of students," AMIkids said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family for a speedy recovery and we will provide whatever assistance we can for them during this time. We will cooperate fully with authorities and our program support staff and counselors will be available for our current students and their families should they need any assistance."
Trey's aunt told Local 10 News that her nephew wasn't perfect but didn't deserve to be shot.
"Black lives matter, and my nephew, he's not too good, too bad, but he's an innocent person and he has a newborn baby," Trey's aunt, Missy Campbell, said. "If you know anyone who's doing any shootings, going around killing all our young black boys, you need to step forward and let people know."
