Teen shot dead weeks after Booker T. Washington High School graduation

Overtown shooting at wake leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded

MIAMI – When Richard Hallman, a 16-year-old football player at Booker T. Washington High School, was fatally shot about two years ago in Allapattah, Jedediah "Eggo" Scatliffe cried, a friend said.

Marlon Eason, 10, was also slain that day in Overtown. He was playing basketball near Dunbar Elementary School in front of his grandmother's house when he was shot in the head.

Jedidah remembered both of them. He kept a painting of Richard in his room. On Friday night, during a wake for a friend in Overtown, it was his turn. He was fatally shot\ at 1645 NW 4 Ave.

Miami Fire Rescue personnel rushed Jedediah and another person wounded in the Friday night shooting to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. Relatives said he had plans to go to college in Tallahassee.

"They took my son away from me -- 18 years," Jedediah's mom Trevale Harris said in tears. "Please, please let me know who did this to my son, please ... please I am begging you. Please tell me why."

Harris had a message for the killer: "Turn yourself in. It's going to be on your conscious."

The fatal shooting happened a few days after Brian Brown, 19, a North Miami Beach Senior High School recent graduate with a football scholarship, was fatally shot this week.

Brian's parents were also grieving. His father, Craig Brown, said he was set to go play football for Merced College in California. Doctors at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center pronounced the teenager dead Wednesday.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted early Saturday morning.

"Inexplicable and cowardly gun violence continues with the overnight killing of Miami teen. Muster the courage, end the madness, speak up."
