Miami-Dade police Detective Marjorie Eloi said Anthony Will, 29, of Denver, got into a yellow taxi cab after leaving a club and asked the driver to take him somewhere near Zoo Miami.

Because Will was unfamiliar with the addresses in the area, he recognized the apartment complex where he was visiting and asked for the driver to drop him off across the street, Eloi said.

As Will pulled out his wallet to pay the $70 cab fare, the driver became irate, got out of the car and charged at his passenger, Eloi said.

Will tried to run away but was tackled by the driver, knocking him to the ground, Eloi said. The driver then put Will in a chokehold and repeatedly beat him, Eloi said.

During the attack, the driver took $800 in cash from Will's pants pocket before getting back into the cab and driving away, Eloi said.

Will was treated at the scene for abrasions to his face.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
