Tourist struck by car in Miami Beach has no recollection of being hit

Abhishek Tulsyan, 24, in wheelchair after Dec. 24 crash

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A tourist who was struck by a car last month in Miami Beach spoke to Local 10 News on Tuesday.

Surveillance video captured the Dec. 24 hit-and-run crash at Ninth Street and Collins Avenue.

Abhishek Tulsyan, 24, was standing on the sidewalk, waiting to cross the road, when he was mowed down by a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro convertible about 2:30 a.m.

"I don't really have any memory of me being hit.  It was a shock to me, the moment the car hit me," Tulsyan said.

Tulsyan spoke to Local 10 News via Skype from his wheelchair in Boston after spending nearly a month in a South Florida hospital.

"I could not imagine a car coming onto the pedestrian part and hitting me from there," he said.

Tulsyan, a college student who was in town for his winter break, said he never saw the car coming.

Since then, he's been recovering from multiple broken bones and internal trauma. He is unable to walk long distances and is in intensive physical therapy.

"It's been a very tough time, and like, having fractures in critical areas, like my back -- it's been a very, very painful experience for me," Tulsyan said.

But Tulsyan said he is grateful to be alive and wonders how a driver could be so cruel to leave the scene.

Miami Beach police said the Camaro convertible is either black or dark blue.

Tulsyan is asking for those with information to come forward.

"I would say, just speak up, just tell the public that this is not acceptable, and so this does not happen to anyone further," he said.

Anyone with information about the driver is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
