Victim confronts man carrying his stolen saw in Deerfield Beach

Mejia Gutierrez records confrontation on cellphone

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – The victim of several thefts in the past few weeks confronted a man Sunday night who he saw on his way home from work carrying his stolen saw, deputies said.

According to Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter, the victim, Mejia Gutierrez rushed home after he saw what he believed was his saw and realized that it had in fact been stolen.

Carter said Gutierrez searched for the accused thief and found him near the 4000 block of Northwest Third Avenue in Deerfield Beach.

The victim confronted the man while recording the incident on his cellphone.

Carter said the thief told Gutierrez that the saw belonged to his friend, but Gutierrez insisted that the saw belonged to him.

The thief eventually dropped the saw and admitted to taking the tool, Carter said.

According to Carter, the man asked Gutierrez not to call the police and tried to snatch the phone, but he wasn't able to and he ran away.

"I got you. I got you," Gutierrez said to the man in the video.

"I didn't steal no saw," the man said.

"I have to call the cops right now," Gutierrez said.

"Ok, go ahead," the man said. "I'm going to go get my friend."

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to call Detective Cardarelli at 954-480-4300. Anonymous tips can be made to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
