Woman attends hearing for roommate accused of nearly beating her to death

Byron Mitchell, 35, chooses not to appear at hearing

MIAMI – A young woman beaten into a coma by her roommate whom she found on Craigslist went to court Friday to attend the hearing of her accused attacker.

"I really don't want to say anything to him, but if I were to say something, I would probably ask him why he did it," Danielle Jones said.

Jones, 23, sat in the courtroom waiting to see her former roommate, Byron Mitchell, 35, for the first time since police say she was beaten, stabbed and choked by Mitchell inside their Overtown apartment.

"I think that he knocked me out before everything happened, so I don't remember what happened," Jones said.

Jones spent 24 days in a coma after the Valentine's Day attack and continues to recover.

Mitchell chose not to appear in court Friday and will remain in jail until his trial.

"It's never easy to look at the face of the man who nearly killed your daughter, but we're here because we want the judge know that we care," Jones' mother, Aimee Nikolov, said.

Nikolov said her daughter had severe head trauma and multiple cuts, but she's still expected to make a full recovery.
