MIAMI – A young mother is clinging to life after being shot in what police are calling a road-rage incident in Miami.
Police said the 19-year-old mother of two was a passenger in her boyfriend's car when it was riddled with bullets.
"My sister means a lot to me. It really hurts to see her like this," the victim's brother, Lazaro Sanchez, said.
Sanchez spoke to Local 10 News reporter Michael Seiden on Thursday outside Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where Alyssa Sanchez is being treated.
Police said she was shot in the head Monday during a suspected road-rage incident.
"I get a call from her boyfriend stating that my sister got shot in the head," Lazaro Sanchez said. "He told me that he took her to the hospital. He was so freaked out. He didn't have any details for me."
Alyssa Sanchez and her boyfriend were on the way to the boyfriend's house near Southwest 27th Avenue and Southwest 14th Street when police said Alyssa Sanchez's boyfriend got into an argument with another driver.
Police said the driver pulled out a gun and started firing.
One of the bullets struck the young mother in the head.
Police said the gunman fled the scene before officers arrived.
Alyssa Sanchez remains in a medically induced coma.
"She's just 19. She's super young. She really doesn't deserve this," Lazaro Sanchez said. "You know, she has a long life ahead of her with her kids. They don't have a father, so the least they can have is a mother."
