2 groups of Cuban migrants land in Florida Keys

12 migrants arrive at Harry Harris Park; 7 others land on island near Geiger Key

KEY WEST, Fla. ā€“ Two groups of Cuban migrants came ashore Friday morning in the Florida Keys.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said the first group of 12 Cuban men made landfall about 5 a.m. at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier. She said another group of seven men landed on a small island off Geiger Key about six hours later.

Herrin said the first group arrived on a 15-foot boat. She said they appeared to be in good condition, although they were slightly dehydrated.

The second group of men were removed from the island and taken to shore. They were also in good condition.

All 19 migrants were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

Under the "wet foot, dry foot" policy, Cuban migrants who set foot on U.S. soil are typically allowed to stay, while those intercepted at sea are sent back.
