Daniella Levine Cava newest Miami-Dade County commissioner

Political newcomer defeats incumbent Lynda Bell in District 8 race

PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – For only the third time in Miami-Dade County history, an incumbent commissioner has been defeated.

Political newcomer Daniella Levine Cava defeated incumbent Lynda Bell in the contentious District 8 county commission race Tuesday.

District 8 encompasses Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay, Homestead and portions of southern Miami-Dade County.

Bell had held the seat since 2010. She helped lead the effort to change the county charter to include term limits for commissioners.

Cava unveiled a five-point plan for moving southern Miami-Dade County forward on her campaign website. It includes job creation, fighting for the area's fair share, opposing stadium deals and other giveaways for mega-millionaires, fighting corruption and supporting a better quality of life.

"The results are clear and my platform is clear," Cava said after her victory.

It wasn't known if Bell called Cava to concede the race.
